The .music domain registry has announced a new category of domain names known as Service Names, which do not require traditional nexus requirements. This move aims to make registration easier for a broader range of individuals, including domain investors, by eliminating the need for a direct connection to the music industry.
Typically, registering a .music domain involves demonstrating a specific link to the music sector and the desired name, a restriction that has limited wider participation. As a result, only a fraction of the registered .music domains are currently active in the zone due to incomplete verifications.
The introduction of Service Names, designed for commercial and business purposes, offers a way for domain investors and others without direct ties to the music industry to acquire these domains. This new category does away with the nexus rules that govern regular .music domains, providing more accessibility to interested parties.
To highlight the most valuable Service Names, the registry has curated a selection of domains under the Platinum category. Examples include ai.music, digital.music, and store.music, which are up for auction in a sealed-bid format with bids closing at midnight UTC on June 29.
Additionally, less premium names will be auctioned off in four weekly intervals, with bids starting at $199 and $299. These names typically consist of two-word combinations such as BestSoul.music, EMDlinks.music, and FreeIndie.music. All auctions are conducted on the auction.music platform, where a list of available names can be accessed.
The initiative to offer Service Names without nexus requirements represents a shift in the domain registration landscape, providing a more inclusive environment for potential registrants. By opening up opportunities for domain investors and other commercial entities to participate in acquiring .music domains, the registry aims to stimulate broader interest and engagement within the domain industry.
The implementation of these new domain options reflects a strategic effort to enhance accessibility and diversity within the domain name market. As the online landscape continues to evolve, initiatives like the introduction of Service Names demonstrate a proactive approach to catering to the varied needs and interests of domain investors and businesses alike.
