English pop artist Ellie Goulding is set to headline a free concert in the Domain on December 10, marking the opening of the Art Gallery of NSW’s new Sydney Modern wing. The monumental $344 million project will also feature performances by local musicians Meg Mac and Electric Fields. Additionally, the celebration will include a range of free events to engage the public.
Kamilaroi artist Reko Rennie has orchestrated a stunning drone show that will illuminate the skies over Woolloomooloo from December 3 to 11. Four hundred drones will create an artistic spectacle above the gallery and Royal Botanic Garden, synchronized with a captivating soundtrack.
Several panels will bring together notable figures in food, arts, politics, comedy, and architecture to explore the challenges and opportunities in the realm of arts and culture. Renowned presenter and cookbook author Adam Liaw will lead a discussion on Sydney’s unique dining culture with acclaimed chefs Christine Manfield, Matt Moran, and Clayton Wells, who is set to open a restaurant in the new wing.
The power of popular culture will be dissected by a panel featuring artist Emily Johnson, comic book artist Nicola Scott, and illustrator Howie Tsui, led by presenter Yumi Stynes. Esteemed personalities such as former Australian governor-general Dame Quentin Bryce, human rights barrister Geoffrey Robertson, Guggenheim Museum New York curator X Zhu-Nowell, and artist Adrián Villar Rojas will also participate in various panels.
Additionally, multidisciplinary artist Brook Andrew will present his work Gaban, while actor and filmmaker Maria Tran will showcase her choreographed piece Rest. The Milingimbi Art & Culture center from north-east Arnhem Land will host a weaving workshop as part of the festivities. The galleries will extend their operating hours until 10pm each night during the celebration period.
The new wing of the Art Gallery of NSW, along with the revitalization of the current building, will be unveiled on December 3. An “art garden” will connect the new and existing buildings, featuring a massive underground exhibition hall housed within a decommissioned WWII-era oil tank. All events are free, with registration required for some activities, and registration is currently open.
