ICANN, the Internet overseer, has attracted 100 organizations interested in expanding generic top-level domains (gTLDs) beyond traditional endings like .com and .edu. This initiative, years in the making, aims to introduce new domain extensions such as .paris, .canon, .hotel, and .eco, enabling a diverse range of web and email addresses.
While the 100 registrants remain undisclosed, they have until March 29 to sign up for the program and until April 12 to formally apply for up to 50 gTLDs each. This surge of interest signifies a significant desire across various sectors to introduce fresh internet addresses, although the evaluation process will likely be prolonged as ICANN reviews the applications.
The gTLD expansion has sparked concerns among advertising groups regarding potential challenges in protecting brands and trademarks. ICANN, however, has implemented safeguards, including a trademark clearinghouse, to address these apprehensions and ensure a smooth transition.
Successful gTLD applicants not only secure the rights to use a specific internet address but also gain the authority to operate the corresponding registry, akin to Verisign’s management of the .com registry. However, this privilege comes at a substantial cost — $185,000 to apply as a gTLD operator and an annual $25,000 fee to maintain the registry.
The evaluation process for applicants is rigorous and multi-phased, encompassing Administrative Check, Initial Evaluation, Extended Evaluation, String Contention, Dispute Resolution, and Pre-delegation stages. The timeline for this assessment varies, with successful applications potentially taking nine months to complete, while more complex cases could extend up to 20 months or longer.
ICANN’s detailed evaluation framework, outlined in a comprehensive 349-page guidebook, underscores the complexity and thoroughness of the application process. While the financial and procedural demands may deter casual applicants, ICANN’s meticulous approach is essential to ensure the integrity and stability of the internet’s domain landscape.
