The Association of Chairs (AoC) is in the process of reclaiming its website domain following a cyberattack that targeted the organization recently. The attack, which occurred on 23 May, resulted in the loss of access to the website domain and associated email addresses. The new domain for the organization is now associationofchairs.co.uk, with email addresses ending in .co.uk instead of the previous .org.uk.
Fortunately, there is no indication that any personal data was compromised during the cyberattack. The login details of members are securely managed by the software company partner, sheepCRM. To access resources, charity members can log in through the SheepApp or the members’ area on AoC’s new website.
Joe Saxton, the Chair of AoC, mentioned that initially, they were unsure about the motives of the hackers. There were concerns about potential data breaches or attempts to exploit the organization’s payment system. However, Liz Lowther, the Chief Executive of AoC, assured that immediate steps were taken to secure their systems post-attack.
The organization promptly alerted its members and supporters through various channels not to engage with any communications from the old domain and to refrain from using the website until further notice. The staff and suppliers of AoC worked diligently over the bank holiday weekend to address the situation.
Currently, the old domain of AoC is listed for sale at an auction. However, the organization is optimistic about regaining access to the old domain in the near future and is in discussions with Nominet, the operator of the UK’s national domain name registry, to facilitate this process.
Expressing gratitude for the support received, AoC acknowledged the assistance of its IT suppliers, Ave, sheepCRM, and Transpeed Ltd, who provided essential guidance and support during this challenging period. The organization emphasized the importance of partnering with reliable and security-focused entities to mitigate the impact of such cyber incidents.
Despite the disruption caused by the cyberattack, AoC aims to resume normal operations swiftly. The organization plans to share insights from this experience to assist others facing similar challenges. For now, AoC looks forward to returning to business as usual and appreciates the ongoing support from its stakeholders.
Following the cyber incident, AoC reassured its audience that any emails sent to the organization using the old .org.uk email addresses after 4 pm on 23 May might not have been received. The organization continues to provide updates and insights on the incident to ensure transparency and maintain trust among its members and supporters.
Cybersecurity breaches and attacks have become prevalent across various sectors, including charities and non-profit organizations. It is crucial for entities like AoC to remain vigilant, implement robust security measures, and collaborate with trusted partners to safeguard their digital assets and maintain the trust of their stakeholders in an increasingly digital landscape.
