The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) has reselected the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) to handle disputes concerning the registration of new generic Top-Level Domains (gTLDs) for the second time. This partnership underscores ICC’s reputation as a prominent provider of dispute resolution services in the tech industry and highlights ICANN’s confidence in ICC’s ability to ensure fair and transparent resolution of domain name disputes.
ICANN is set to open the application window for gTLD registrations in April 2026, allowing third parties to file objections against such registrations. ICC will oversee the proceedings for determining objections, leveraging its prior experience in managing cases arising from gTLD registrations in 2012. These proceedings will culminate in a binding expert decision administered by the ICC International Centre for Alternative Dispute Resolution in accordance with its Expert Rules and various ICANN guidelines and procedures.
Alya Ladjimi, Counsel of the ICC International Centre for Alternative Dispute Resolution, expressed gratitude for being chosen again as the ICANN dispute resolution service provider. She emphasized ICC’s commitment to leveraging its expertise in dispute resolution to ensure the effective and equitable resolution of domain name disputes in today’s rapidly evolving digital landscape. The Centre will manage all aspects of the proceedings, including administrative reviews, expert panel appointments, and procedural cost assessments.
During ICC-administered proceedings, parties will have the opportunity to explore settlement options through direct negotiations or mediation, drawing on the Centre’s extensive experience in administering proceedings under the ICC Mediation Rules. Furthermore, an archive of ICC expert determinations from the 2012 New gTLD round is available for reference.
The renewed collaboration between ICANN and ICC signifies a continued effort to maintain the integrity of the domain registration process and uphold standards of fairness and transparency in resolving domain name disputes. As the digital landscape continues to evolve, the role of reputable institutions like ICC in facilitating dispute resolution in the tech sector remains crucial for ensuring a level playing field for businesses and individuals navigating the complexities of cyberspace.
