Let’s Encrypt, the renowned certificate authority famous for its free TLS/SSL certificates, has embarked on issuing digital certificates for IP addresses. While not the pioneer in this domain, Let’s Encrypt offers this service at no cost, unlike other providers charging between $40 to $90 annually for similar certificates.
For individuals with static IP addresses seeking to host websites, an IP address certificate allows them to provide a secure connection to visitors using the numeric address, bypassing the need for a domain name. Although browsing websites via IP addresses is not a common practice due to the prevalence of domain names, there are scenarios where having an IP address certificate could be beneficial.
Using IP addresses to access websites may not be the standard approach, as domain names offer more flexibility, especially during backend changes. Domain names also provide a sense of ownership and are subject to established arbitration rules, unlike IP addresses, which can lead to complications in disputes.
According to Aaron Gable, a principal engineer at Let’s Encrypt, IP address certificates have been a requested feature for several years. There are various potential use cases for IP address certificates, such as providing default landing pages, enabling secure connections without domain names, supporting DNS over HTTPS (DoH) servers, and securing temporary connections for server administration.
The industry trend toward short-lived certificates is gaining momentum to enhance security by reducing the risk of fraudulent certificate use. Let’s Encrypt has adopted a six-day lifespan for its IP address certificates as a security measure, emphasizing the need for automation in the certificate renewal process using tools like Certbot.
While the adoption of IP address certificates is on the rise, the general availability of Let’s Encrypt’s IP address certificates is expected later this year, offering a new dimension to website security and accessibility.
As the digital landscape evolves, the introduction of free IP address certificates by Let’s Encrypt signifies a shift towards enhancing online security and accessibility for website owners and users alike, providing a cost-effective alternative to traditional domain name certificates.
