Verisign Secures RDAP Patent for Domain Name Registries

Verisign, a prominent player in the domain name industry, has recently been granted a patent by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office related to the Registration Data Access Protocol (RDAP) for generic top-level domain (gTLD) registries. This patent, numbered 12,250,217, focuses on the architecture of RDAP within these registries.

RDAP, which stands for Registration Data Access Protocol, serves as the new standard for accessing domain registration records, replacing the traditional Whois system. Verisign’s patent outlines a method to retrieve registrant information from a “thick” RDAP provider, ensuring secure transfer of this data and presenting the results effectively.

Unlike “thin” RDAP/Whois records that lack detailed registrant contact information, Verisign is known for maintaining such “thin” records, with registrars holding the contact details instead. In contrast, “thick” registries like Verisign retain the registrant information directly within their systems.

The patented method involves a process where an RDAP client requests RDAP data, provides the query and cryptographic credential to an RDAP server, which in turn interacts with thick RDAP servers to gather the necessary information. This data is then encrypted using cryptographic keys associated with the client’s credentials for secure transmission and decryption before being presented to the user.

Verisign’s patent application for this innovative method was filed in October 2020 and has now been successfully granted by the USPTO. This development underscores Verisign’s commitment to advancing technology and enhancing the efficiency of domain name registries.

In the broader context of domain name management, this patent signifies a significant step towards streamlining the process of accessing and managing registration data within gTLD registries. By pioneering a secure and efficient method for obtaining registrant information, Verisign is contributing to the evolution of domain name industry standards and practices.

Experts in the field emphasize the importance of such advancements in ensuring the accuracy, security, and accessibility of domain registration information. Moving forward, this patent is expected to have a notable impact on how domain name registries operate and handle registrant data, setting a precedent for future innovations in the industry.
